The brief.

  1. The contest
  2. The team
  3. The name

A relaxation bed built around water, steam, music and aromatherapy, submitted to a brief asking for the next generation of water-handling appliances for Mexico.

The contest.

Sixteen finalist teams were selected from more than 160 projects submitted.

Judged on innovative aesthetics, usability, and new features.

The finalists presented at an event where the winner was announced. Amphibia was a finalist and did not win.

Rodrigo Covarrubias was one of the winners of that edition. He later became a close friend, and today he is a designer at Dindie.

The team.

Team: Agustín de la O, David Zedán, Ulises Navarro.

Course instructor: María del Carmen Villarreal Erhard.

The name.

Named Amphibia. An amphibian lives in two states and commits to neither, which is exactly the condition the object creates: surrounded by water as steam, lying in air, on the threshold rather than in the bath.

It is also why the arcs stop short of closing.

New renders of the original concept
Occupied, fully reclined, arms down. The figure and the steam are new, the form is not. New render of the original concept.Empty with the steam running. The original set showed the object dry. New render of the original concept. The control panel, overhead and in reach of a hand at rest. The panel and its four targets are on the original render; whether the Bluetooth glyph is original is unconfirmed. New render of the original concept.
Take this with you
  1. 01An appliance can be a place you go to, not just an object in a corner.
  2. 02A name can carry the design intent: amphibian, committed to neither state.
  3. 03When a form stops short of closing, it stays a bed instead of becoming a capsule.
